Google Warns Pixel 6a Users: Replace Battery Now

    Byte-Sized Brief

    • Some Pixel 6a phones have battery overheating risks.
    • Mandatory Android 16 update might reduce this danger.
    • Google might replace your battery or offer cash or credit.

Google recently confirmed that some Pixel 6a phones have defective lithium-ion batteries that run the risk of overheating. Instead of issuing a recall, the company rolled out an automatic Android 16 update to all Pixel 6a devices in early July. Impacted devices with batteries that have completed 400 charge cycles also received a battery management tool that cuts down the chance of rising temperatures—but also reduces overall performance (translation: more frequent charging).

While Google says you can continue to use your Pixel 6a after the update, it’s not a long-term solution since the battery tweak doesn’t eliminate your risk. Your first step is to review and apply to the Pixel 6a Battery Performance Program to see if you qualify for a new battery via a walk-in center (repair centers are in limited countries) or mail-in repair. Pixel owners who don’t meet these requirements when registering might still be able to receive support through cash or a hardware credit. Either way, we recommend getting started with this process ASAP!

    The Bottom Line

If you have a Pixel 6a with a defective battery, now’s the time to look at replacing this component—or the phone altogether. Check Google’s Pixel 6a Battery Performance Program site to see if you qualify or seek other support as soon as you can to keep yourself safe.
